How accurate are calorie counters on machines?

by Kcurly on January 5, 2010

The LA Times just did an article on the accuracy of gym machines’ measurements of caloric burn during workouts. Read the article here if you’re interested.

Personally, I’ve never trusted these ever since the day when the elliptical told me that I burned 400 calories in 30 minutes. I’d not even really broken a sweat and was reading a magazine most of the time.

If I try to factor in my caloric burn into my calories that day, I usually will look up the activity on the DP and take half (I mean, I have to be burning at least half of that number, right?) of the number it reports.

Do I still look at the calorie measurements on the machine? Yes, I do. It just makes me feel good for some reason ;)

How do you feel about the caloric measurements on gym machines?
